HSBCnet Uses & Principles Document: Pagination

HSBCnet required a document describing the form and usage of common elements – essentially a design system with detailed usage guidelines.

One of the elements I looked at was the pagination model they were using for multi-paged tables.

Gathering Samples

I started by sketching out as many different pagination forms as I could find. After a while, I started to notice that some of the graphical forms shared a basic structure so I redrew all the forms as simple mechanical representations rather than completed visual designs. I also added some notes about some of the visual linguistics involved.

Once I had the basic structures I started to look at the functionality and drew out as many possible scenarios as I could discover for the most common pagination form.

Presenting And Discussing The Results

Armed with these two key pieces I then gathered the rest of the team for a discussion on which might be the best path to follow.

Documenting The Outcome

From the discussion I was able to make the best choice and, from my notes, I was able to write a detailed explanation of how the pagination would function. I also produced a working proof of concept and demonstration tool in Axure
